In the body of the email, when I use a double space or a pound sign, this appears as a question mark (?) in the text as seen by the recipient, and as seen in my Thunderbird "Sent" folder. This happens regardless of whether I use Unicode or Western text encoding.

The Thunderbird Help forum suggests that this may be a problem when Yahoo mail is handled by AOL servers.

Is there a solution to this problem (other than not using Yahoo Mail)?

If you are going to use Yahoo you need to make the change, it is that simple.

you have to set 7bit encoding and wait for it to mess up with other mail providers. You might be luck if everyone you email is in an English speaking country.

You will need to use the config editor to modify the setting mail.strictly_mime to true to force Thunderbird to use 7bit encoding in email.

Thanks, Matt. That's a bit technical for me; I'm very reluctant to alter Config Editor.

What did you mean by "mess up with other mail providers"?

If I mailed a non-English speaking country, would the 7-bit encoding lead to poor text rendering?
