My Thunderbird was updated recently and from that time forward, I have been unable to send

emails. When I compose a message and then click on the send button an error message is displayed that says:

Sending of the message failed. Unable to open the temporary file C:\Users\ME\AppData\Local\Temp\nsmail.tmp. Check your 'Temporary Directory' setting.

I looked in the directory above and sure enough the named file was not present. So I thought that maybe the program did not know how to write that file, so I saved an empty file of that name in that directory. Since the message was still displayed, I clicked on the send button again. Immediately the file disappeared from the directory and the error message was displayed that says:

Sending of the message failed. Unable to open the temporary file C:\Users\ME\AppData\Local\Temp\nsmail.tmp. Check your 'Temporary Directory' setting.

So three questions remain:

1) Where do I find the 'Temporary Directory' setting?

2) What is tat file used for, what is it supposed to contain?

3) When is the program supposed to create it?

All one question really. The temporary setting obviously point to C:\Users\ME\AppData\Local\Temp as that is the path given in the error, the file is your email and it is created so all the parts can be assembled and converted to text ready for transmission.

In 100% of instances there folks have had issues in the past with nsmail.tmp it is because they have an antivirus product that is causing the problem. Mostly from memory Avast. but create an exception in whatever passes as an anti virus program on your system of the file to prevent it causing issues in the future.
