I suspect that my bank tried to show a verification pop-up while I was on a third-party site, and because pop-ups were disabled the third party rejected my request. My question is:

How much of my bank's website address do I need to put in the "Allowed Web Sites - Pop-ups" edit box, seeing as I wasn't on that website at the time. Would "https://name-of-bank.com" be sufficient? Or, are wildcards allowed in the URL?

Firefox doesn't default block popups unless you installed 3rd party Addon that block popups that can affect login issues. You need try Private Mode window browser to verify whether Addons are issue or not and make sure no Addons are enable in Private Mode when doing so. And if it works that means there are Addon or some other software causing the issue besides Firefox itself.

I quote from: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/pop-blocker-settings-exceptions-troubleshooting

"Pop-up blocking is turned on by default, so you don't have to worry about enabling it to prevent pop-ups from appearing in Firefox."

So did you try or not?

On the page: "Settings > Privacy and Security > Permissions" I have chosen to "Block pop-up windows" by ticking the box. Now, when I wish to have an exception, I open "Exceptions..." and add a web address. My question is:

How much of a site's address do I need to enter into the edit box? I might paraphrase this question by asking whether it is sufficient to enter only the address up to (and including) the top-level domain?

Exceptions work with an origin (protocol and hostname), so only use the firsrt part and not an extra path that is appended like for this website https://support.mozilla.org. In some cases you need to use the top level domain (https://google.com) to include all sub domains.
