On 6/22/11 I updated to Firefox 5.0. and now all the pages are very slow to load. Am I the only person with this problem? Is there a fix?

I have Window XP. I usually use Firefox as my browser because the pages load faster than Internet Explorer. As of today, after I updated to Firefox 5.0, all pages are loading very slowly.

Does this happen in safe mode of Firefox, or in another browser?

I just log in to Mozilla Firefox. As far as I know, I have never logged on using Safe Mode.

I recommend switching back to a legacy version (to everyone). For me, version 3 works great, and does not have the many many problems that have plagued both 4 and 5.

Firefox 3.6 (The last good version of Firefox)

I'm having the same problem. Firefox 4.0 worked great. I just updated to 5.0, and it takes minutes to start up and pages never completely load. I thought it wasn't connecting at all, but parts of pages eventually appear. I tried reverting to 4.0, but the problem now appears there, too. Does anyone have any idea? No difference in SafeMode.

Update: I temporarily turned off anti-virus (Norton Security Suite) and it fixed the problem. I now need to determine how to fix.

Update #2: Ran Norton Live Update. Same problem. Then rebooted the machine and now Firefox runs fine. It appears a bit quicker than Firefox 4. But not all add-ins are compatible yet. On a do-over, I'd wait a couple of weeks.

Let me add my voice to this one: some sites load slowly, but ALL images do (I feel like I'm on dial-up again), and most video (YouTube, ABC News, Cheezburger Network) is also slow to load, even single-strip webcomics. YouTube videos are affected whether I use Firefox or the IE Tab extension (I have to use the latter because for reasons I have yet to figure out, YouTube insists my cookies are turned off when not using IE Tab).

I had the same problem in safemode as well...so I went into the Control Panel and used the Add/Delete programs to delete Mozilla 5.0. When given the choice to delete all personal info and addons etc, I kept them all. Just deleted the base program. Then I went to www.filehippo.com and loaded firefox 4.01 which was the last firefox before the upgrade to 5.0......It now works just fine,,,no more slow loading and "script running" messages.....

Firefox 5.0 seems to be working fine now. I may have had a slow connection. Thanks for all your feedback.

Firefox 4 was bad but Firefox 5 is awful !!

It's slow to start, hangs, everything seems to take forever to do and i've never had so many page errors ... which i think is due to the time it takes to get things to load.

Firefox 3 was great, why have we been landed with this millstone around our ankles ??

I have another laptop still running the old FF and it's positively rapid compared to FF5.

If things dont improve SOON i'll be going elsewhere for a browser. Just can't be doing with this, just makes everything so slow and unstable.

Come on Mozilla - get it sorted !!

I agree. We use the Internet, all day, every day (it's directly related to our work, so we have to). Firefox 4.01 was like getting in an old 70's station wagon (a boat basically) with a V8 that only runs on 6 cylinders.

When 5.0 came out, we jumped on it in the hopes the problems would be resolved, what a disappointment, 5.0 isn't better then 4.01 and in fact I think it's worse now then before (as if 4.01 weren't bad enough).

No need to run in safe mode or any of that jazz, brand new lightening fast HP comps (two of them, both suffering from the same malady, which is now FF) with Intel Processor i5 CPUs and Windows 7. This baggage is all Firefox issues. I'm gonna have to switch after all these years, because it's crippling our work time (it took us hours to complete a task that shouldn't have taken more then one). As an independent contractor, we can't have this, and I suspect most can't.

Symptoms: Slow loading, freezing, partially loaded pages...it's obvious this is an issue. What's worse, you never know when it's going to "not respond" and unless you save your work after each darned click, you're done and doomed to redo it.

I sure hope it gets fixed (soon) if not...bye-bye Firefox.

I upgraded to FF 5, and it was just terrible! I had to revert to 3 (not chancing 4). First of all, everything was really slow, I couldn't use the refresh button nor the back/forward buttons, even the f5 key wouldn't work. Refreshing is often really necessary when playing games or visiting sites that might have slow servers. My status bar was just weird, and some features on sites I often use no longer functioned. I tried all the "fixes" suggested (believe me, I trawled the entire net as well as here) but nothing solved my problems. Since I reverted to version 3, everything is working like a dream again. I've always been a huge fan of Firefox, and I really really hope that future updates to FF5 address the problems that a great many people seem to have with it. I really don't want to have to change my browser, but I will if necessary.

Just wanted to let you know that I was having the same problem. I disable the theme and that took care of the majority of the problem. some images and video are still not loading properly if at all but the over all speed of browsing is back to what it should be.

How do you disable the theme?
