Each time I open a new tab to do a new search it defaults to AVG. I want Google to be my default search tab. I have tried 'about:config' and disabled AVG Safe Search, also 'Tools/Add Ons' etc.

Do you also have other AVG extensions installed, if so disable them.

I'm not sure what you are saying, but I expect you are saying that a new tab opens with an AVG search page instead of a Google search page. Firefox by default does not open a search page for a new tab.

"AVG Safe" is an extension installed with "AVG Free" search, it is not an about:config entry, you would disable it from the Entesnions area of addons ("Ctrl+Shift+A") or Tools > Options > Add-ons. You may find other junk related to your problem by looking in about:config and fitering on AVG or whatever you find as a url in your page that you see.

As far as searching goes the builtin Search bar with Google as the default engine works perfectly well for me.

Thank you, but as a computer beginner I'm not sure what that meant. When I go to Tools/Options/Add Ons do I disable the AVG Safe Search? I have done this but each new tab still defaults to an AVG search rather than a Google search.

Thanks for your help.

Guessing at what "Not Helpful" might mean to 4 out of 5 people:

There are many different things that could have been installed that mess up getting an empty (blank) new tab: "ask.com toolbar", "yahoo toolbar", "McAfee Site Advisor". Also "AVG Safe" already mentioned installed with "AVG Free". You will find some information on removal in Problematic extensions

If the wanted behavior was to have something other than a blank tab, there is

@squiz (owner) Did you look in the about:config settings for the your the bad stuff, and at the links already provided.

Here are some more involved with getting rid of toolbars, problematic extensions, and getting rid of the Yahoo toolbar. Is there really an AVG toolbar.

there must be some way of removing the Yahoo search engine for goodness sake. about:config - DOESN'T WORK yahoo comes back NO Yahoo of any type is listed as an extension so can't disable it that way. Re-installed Firefox, - Yahoo comes straight back. What the heck?????? Tried every link and method listed in this (and many other) forums... NOTHING works. Its like a cancer, it keeps coming back. Someone tell me how to get rid of this or I can only resort to Chrome and never come back to Firefox.

Sorted it.. C:\program files\Mozilla Firefox Find the file called yahoo.xml and (whoo hoo) DELETE IT

Yahoo becomes ex-yahoo. Someone should sue Yahoo for making it this difficult. Its a conspiracy.

@JudgeDredd1824, Thanks, expect your addition to the thread will help a lot of people, wonder who or what was responsible for that new unwelcome addition involving Yahoo.
