Applications Preference - Action Not Saved

more options

Firefox 28 OS X 10.9.2

I download a particular file type from three or four different sources and would like Firefox to automatically open an application when it does so.

The file extension is qfx; the application is Quicken Essentials:

application/vnd.intu.qfx application/x-qfx

Firefox will not save my selection. Whenever Firefox is quit and relaunched, it asks me again what I'd like to do with this file type. I have checked the box "do this automatically for files like this from now on".

When I review the Applications Preference for the file qfx type I see it's saved - it just doesn't work.

How may I fix this?

Which is it? Is your setting correctly set under Preferences - Applications or not?

If your setting is forgotten after Firefox is restarted, see the following article.

If the setting is remembered but it simply doesn't work,

  1. Some file types have multiple MIME types associated with them. All entries must be set accordingly under Preferences - Applications.
  2. The sever may be sending the generic Content-Type: application/octet-stream MIME type.
  3. The server may be sending the Content-Disposition: attachment header.

You can check the Content-Type and Content-Disposition headers by examining the response headers using the Web Console. Press Command+Alt+K to open it, then click the download link. In the web console, click the GET request for the file in question. For more details, see the following article.

If the download link is publicly accessible, you can just post it here and someone will have a look at the headers for you.

If the problem is the Content-Disposition: attachment header, install the InlineDisposition add-on.

If the problem is the Content-Type: application/octet-stream header, you can correct it with the Force Content-Type add-on.

URL: (.qfx)$ Old Content-Type: application/octet-stream New Content-Type: application/x-qfx
