how do i make firefox quit asking me if i want to do things? this has started recently with 'ads' for synch, etc. opening in a tab while i am trying to work.

That tab will open after Firefox updates, which it probably recently did since you are running the latest version. I'm sorry it inconvenienced you, please feel free to just close the tab. This isn't something with every update, only with updates that we want to let users know about new features.

Is there any way to get it to not offer me new features? Used to be, it would not do this even after update.
