How is mail routed from compose/write window to sent folder?

When I send mail from Thunderbird using my Gmail account on a Mac with Yosemite OS, it appears to send it away and then downloads it from gmail to the sent box. Can this be avoided? It plugs up my bandwidth and causes other problems. Thanks for any advice.

maybe this answer will help you: "Sent" folders

Greetz, jazzmatiker

btw. I think thunderbird doesn't download the mail from gmail - it uploads it a second time, but this time into the "Sent" folder of your gmail account.
