Spellchecker blocked by Windows 8.1
I have just installed Firefox 39.0 on to a new Windows 8.1 computer. The 'correct as I type' is not functioning in Windws 8.1. I've tried all the 'delete browesing history and delelete cookies etc but nothing makes i work. Most noticable is under 'compose' on Gmail. The same Firefox set up works fine on my other computer running Windows XP.
Any ideas?

Do you have a dictionary installed and selected?
You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu. At least one dictionary should be installed and have a check mark to indicate that it is selected.
- Open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.
- Make sure that [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu is check-marked.
You can enable or disable spell checking globally:
- Tools > Options > Advanced : General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"
You can look here for dictionaries:
English (UK) and English(US) dictionaries both installed and the Check my spelling as I type is ticked...
It seems to be Windows 8.1 that is blocking this. :o(

Does "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu of the text area has a tick and is the correct dictionary selected in the Language menu?
Check Spelling does not appear on the right click menu.
I get:- Undo Cut Copy Paste Delete Select All Add Directories Inspect Element.
(I do get Check Spelling on the XP machine)
Is there something missing from the Registry?

Can you attach a screenshot that shows the code of the text area in the Inspector (click Inspect Element) to see if there is a spellcheck="false" attribute?
This will disable the Firefox spelling checker. In most cases the website has its own implementation to check the spelling, so look for a toolbar button in the editor.
there is no spellcheck=false attribute. Screen shot attached

That is a contenteditable div.
Try this extension:
- SpellcheckEverything: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/spellcheckeverything/
Still the same .... no check as I type or any sort of spell check function.
