"Login to server imap.gmail.com failed" appears every time I access my email account. I have to delete it before I can use the account. How can I stop this?

I have Thunderbird on a Windows 10 laptop and on a Windows 8 tablet. This problem was happening on the laptop (Login to Server imap.secureserver.net failed) but not on the tablet until today, just after the tablet went through a Thunderbird update. I can access my three email accounts directly on the GoDaddy email server, and on a Kindle Fire, but not on my Windows computers via Thunderbird.
