How can I get all web pages to open to fill my 17" screen?

I have read through the suggestions - "clear site preferences" is not checked under Privacy. I was able to adjust the size of websites only once for a few pages by using file>exit however that function no longer works.

I have security settings not to remember history etc and block cookies

It seems reasonable to ask if there is a setting to have all sites open to full 17" screen or other sizes, no? If it works for some it should work for all it seems to me.

Thanks for any suggestions and help.

Hi, Firefox remembers zoom settings on a per site basis, so different websites can be adjusted to fit any resolution screen (Ctrl and + key, or Ctrl and - key, or hold Ctrl and turn the mouse wheel). There is also a zoom control button in the 3-bar menu.

More - Font size and zoom - increase the size of web pages.

And - Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars.

If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you.

Thank you for these suggestions, however they don't answer my question. I have been able to save the larger size of web sites which fill my 17" screen for several sites by using File>exit but only once. This function no longer works. I want Firefox to "remember" the larger size for other sites as I add them using File>exit but it no longer works and I am unable to "permanently" re-size any other pages so that they open large.

Some websites use the full width available, while others follow a design principle of using the most readable column width (a subject of research which pre-dates the internet). Modern sites often use a "responsive" design which shifts around depending on the width of your window to adapt to mobile devices. As a result, there's no universal way to resize sites; you nearly always need to help the process.

Maybe there is an add-on which can ease the process of zooming sites? I can't recall reading about any in particular.

I missed your last reply. What if you turn off clearing history at shutdown. Does that make any difference in Firefox's ability to remember your preferred zoom levels?

Do you use any security/privacy/utility software that may "clean" browser data? That could range from a security suite to Advanced SystemCare to CCleaner.

Thanks, under options>security or options>privacy I do not see how to turn off "clear history at shutdown" further, I do occasionally use CCleaner but I don't see any connection to this issue. When I try to resize more sites I can't save the size as I did, it only worked once now file>exit will not remember size. It works for the ones I selected that one time but no more.

Hi blue-ba, on the Options page, Privacy panel, what do you have:

  • Firefox will: Remember history
    • You are not clearing history at shutdown
  • Firefox will: Never remember history
    • Automatic private browsing mode, this could be a problem
  • Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
    • Reveals individual settings so you can uncheck the box for clearing settings at shutdown

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history.

  • do not clear the Site Preferences
  • Clearing "Site Preferences" clears exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, and software installation and exception for password and other website specific data.

You can look at the Default FullZoom Level or NoSquint extension to set a default font size and page zoom on web pages.

Well, I tried all the suggestions above including the two ad-ons. Nothing worked and the ad-ons created more problems rather than solving mine. Finally, I tried sizing each site one at a time closing Firefox each time, that has been the only thing which has worked.

It just seems odd that there is no setting which will recognize your screen size and fill it. It should part of every website instead of making all web pages for the smallest screen.

Maybe:

  • Zoom Page (includes "fit to window" feature)

A lot of web pages use absolute settings to position elements and set a fixed width to text columns like this forum does. In such a case only zooming a page can make if fill available screen estate, but that will enlarge the text.
