I have Windows 10. All was working OK till recently. Now I cannot open attached .doc files as Thunderbird sees them as .pdf and tries to open with Adobe. 2013 Word is happy to open these files but only if I save them to disk first.

Chosen solution

'Tools > 'Options' > 'Attachments' > 'Incoming' tab or 'Meu icon' > 'Options' > Options' > 'Attachments' > 'Incoming' tab

On the left side: 'Microsoft Office Word 97 -2003 document (.doc) It should have an action: select 'Use Microsoft Office Word (default)' click on OK

This solution is what I started with but did not work. Since then, either Microsoft has fixed something (I have had an avalanche of W10 updates) or I have reset something else. Either way, Thunderbird is back to its usual self.
