I had about 100 bookmarks in my Bookmarks toolbar, randomly today, about 75 percent of them disappeared. I tried to do a restore from the Show All Bookmarks , and it says it "Unable to process backup file"

Anyone have any idea how I can get them back?

Chosen solution

Did you check the backups in the bookmarkbackups folder?

The name of a JSON bookmarks backup file includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once.

  • bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder. If the most recent compressed .jsonlz4 in the bookmarkbackups folder is already affected then you need to restore an older JSON backup manually after you have removed all places.sqlite files (including places.sqlite-shm and places.sqlite-wal).

To open the Bookmarks Manager, press the Alt or F10 key bring up the tool bar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control>(Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B.

Open the Bookmarks Toolbar. Are they still listed?

Places Maintenance {web link} Allows to run Maintenance tasks on the database that drives Places, the bookmarks and history module behind Firefox.

Open the Add-ons Manager. Locate the add-on and press the Options button. Then follow the directions.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.
