can't add new contacts to address book, cant edit existing contacts to address book

When I click on address book, I get message that address book shows contacts only after a search. Entering info into search box yields no results. If I try to add a new contact nothing happens. If I click on the write box, I can see my contacts but when I click on properties to update an address, the dialogue box comes up, I fill in the info but when I click o.k. nothing happens.

Please help. A grateful thank you in advance.

I have only ever seen the "shows contacts only after a search" message in connection with a network-hosted address book accessed via LDAP, which is inherently read-only.

So…

Which OS? What version? Which version of Thunderbird? Is it a regular local address book?

I use windows 10, thunderbird 45.6. It is a regular local address book
