Google Hangouts not working despite installing plugin

more options

When I try to use Google Hangouts a screen pops up and says error despite having followed all instruction on installing Google Hangout Plugin, restarting, etc.

I've read some of the forum questions out there and nothing instructed is working.

Sorry, but the Google Talk plugins do not work in Firefox 53. The only plugin that is recognized by Firefox 53 is Flash.

The Extended Support Release (ESR) of Firefox 52 will still run Java, Google Talk, and other old plugins. ESR was first developed to meet the needs of large organizations that wanted Firefox to change much more slowly, but anyone can use it. The main difference is that it gets security updates only, no feature changes for about a year at a time.

More information on this change and ESR: Why do Java, Silverlight, Adobe Acrobat and other plugins no longer work?

I'm not a Mac person, so I can't tell you exactly how best to switch from one version of Firefox to another. I've read you have to "trash" the current app and then install the new one, but please don't take my word for it.
