I am on Win10 Home (v1709) 64bit, and TB 52.5.2 (32-bit); all addressbooks contain some 1,300 addresses. When I go into the 'name or email' search box, and type a name or even a single character, not one address shows up, unless I keep the search empty... which then shows all entries under the selected address book; or All wen selecting "All Address Books". I have started TB in save mode, same behaviour. Any hints appreciated.

Have you checked your Contacts to see if data is stored in appropriate fields? Often, email addresses become filed as "nickname". This generally happens in an import from another address book, where sufficient care hasn't been taken to align the imported fields with those available in Thunderbird. I suspect you need proper names to go into the respective names fields, and not be placed into "Display name".

How have you got to a state where address books don't work? Have they ever worked? When did they stop working?

Yes, as far as I can tell, everything looks as it should. No import has occurred; many years ago, I started fresh with TB; addresses have collected since. The structure is: All Address Books - Personal Address Book (0) - Family (20) - Friend (18) - Professional (31) - Collected Addresses (1250) I never searched this address book; hence, I can't tell, whether is ever worked or not. :( Auto-completion in new e-mail works. And when I delete an entry, it no longer appears in the address field. Address book search on another computer works; it just does not work on mine. ... Just went ahead and exported all addresses; closed TB, and imported them again; same behaviour. Typing an 'a' in the search field should result in heaps of entries being shown... but it doesn't show any.
