prompted for gmail login every time Thunderbird starts
Been using Tbird for a long time without any issues I can't live with, until just now.
New install of LinuxMint 18.3, running Tbird 52.5.0. Things ran fine for about a week; now all of a sudden Tbird starts up, and after a few minutes pops up a dialogue box prompting me for a sign-in to my gmail account (but not for my primary email account with my ISP).
Why has this suddenly cropped up out of the blue? Really annoying, as I'm simultaneously having issues with my password manager too (migrating to new Linux one from a Windows app, import issues, and it won't auto-fill yet), and have to keep manually opening the password database to copy/paste the password in (they're ridiculously long and complicated passwords, impossible to memorize).
Is this some new "improvement" or update to Tbird security or something like that, or maybe a change at gmail, or is there some setting I can change to get this login demand to cease? Thanks so much for any help with this... battling on too many fronts just now with the new OS and learning my way around to want to deal with yet another issue.

Have you logged into your gmail account via the google website recently? It may want you to verify your identity or similar.
Another thing to try when Thunderbird doesn't use a stored password is to clear the relevant stored password.
Tools|Options|Security|Passwords→Save Passwords
Use the search tool and remove all occurrences, after having noted them if not known or committed to memory.
