every time an email arrives I get a pop up notification popping up on the bottom right hand side of my screen. is it a firefox application or is it my email provider ? can I disable this ?

Both. You've told Firefox to give your email provider permission to push the notifications to you. Fortunately, you can revoke that permission: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/push-notifications-firefox
