A folder will not show the number of messages in the subfolders.
I'm using Thunderbird 17.0.8 and I have messages stored in folders and subfolders. If you browse a subfolder it may display 3 messages and down the bottom right corner it says Unread 0 Total 3. The next subfolder may have 6 messages and down the bottom right hand corner Unread 0 Total 6. This means that the folder these subfolders belongs to contains 9 messages, but if you browse the folder itself then the display is Unread 0 Total 0. There seems to be no way that you can get an aggregate of the total number of messages for a particular folder. This is needed if you make a backup copy to a local folder and want to compare the total number of messages in the IMAP folder with the total number of messages in the local copy.

I'm using Thunderbird 17.0.8
Update to the latest version, and come back here if the problem persists. https://www.thunderbird.net/
I updated to 52.8.0 Same problem.I also tried other email browsers such as EM Client and Mailbird. Same problem. Maybe you just cannot get a count of messages at the folder level whatever program you use.
View (Alt-V) - Layout - Folder Pane Columns
This will give you the counters on a per folder basis. By collapsing a parent folder it will show the grand total of all folders underneath. This can be customized for unread and total no. of messages.
Thanks, it is working now.
