I suggest you search the web for a msg to EML converter then. Or msg to mbox. Those proprietary Microsoft formats just don't work with programs that are not from Microsoft.

Don't you have a copy of outlook that Thunderbird can just import from? I mean installed, loaded with the mail and marked as the system default. Thunderbird can import from outlook, it just does not understand the files it writes.
