Firefox 70.0.1 HOSTS file being ignored

Mac OS Catalina 10.15.1 In Preferences, DNS over HTTPS is Off. (I tried toggling that On then Off but nothing changed) In Privacy & Security I have Strict settings, though when Standard is selected the behaviour does not change.

I know that with DNS over HTTPS set to On that HOSTS is ignored. Not ideal but there you go. But with that Off Firefox did respect the HOSTS entries I have.

Something has changed?

How do I get Firefox to always use my HOSTS file before looking elsewhere?

Thank you

There isn't a solution posted, the person seems to have figured it out themself and did not share.

Turning the feature off probably will not stop the issue immediately by itself. You may need to clear the browser cache, and also flush the local DNS cache. Apparently the terminal commands vary by version of OS X. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=flush+dns+cache+mac+os+x&t=lm&ia=web

Thanks.

Catalina sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder

Restart Firefox and it will still load twitter, facebook and instagram which are all comprehensively routed to 0.0.0.0. in my HOSTS file.

I have the same HOSTS file on my PC (Win 10) and use Firefox there. It does respect the HOSTS file.

So this is a mac only issue.

I'm going to have to use pi-hole.

Thanks anyway.
