I share a profile between windows and ubuntu 18.04 boots. WIndows automatically upgraded to 68.8; Ubuntu is still at 68.7. I can no longer use it on Ubuntu, because it says 68.7 is an older browser. I see nothing in the 68.8 release notes indicating profile changes. I'm wondering if there is an incompatibility, and more importantly how this can be worked around.

You're supposed to keep both installations updated. Thunderbird has an inbuilt measure that prevents downgrading a profile. It has been this way for a long time.
