In a lot of cases this is only about a leftover (orphaned) entry in the Windows Registry that wasn't removed by the updater and there is only one Firefox version installed, so removing (uninstall) this older version will actually remove the current Firefox release.
You first have to confirm that you actually have two Firefox versions installed by checking its installation path (one can be a 32 bit version and the other a 64 bit version.

  • (64-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (32-bit Firefox) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Mozilla Firefox (????)

If you have a 64 bit Windows version then also inspect this key for the 32-bit Firefox version:

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Mozilla Firefox (????)
