Firefox no longer saves files into temp folder

I recently discovered that even though Firefox is supposed to save files, I chose to either "Open in Firefox" (.pdf, .pptx, etc.) or "Open in <any application>" (.avi, .mp4 in VLC...) in temp folder, it no longer does so. All pdf-s and other files I try to open in Firefox end up in my downloads folder, which is annoying as I now have to clean it manually. This never happened to me before, and I would like to have this behavior back.

A temporary 'fix' for that issue is outlined in the thread below.
