in trying to follow the instructions to stop advertisers from tracking my web browsing, i used the "tools" icon on the toolbar, clicked on the "options" section and went to the "advanced" area, but there was no box to check that told advertisers not to track my browsing

That option is not in Firefox 3.6, you need to upgrade to Firefox 4 to get it.
