Hit CTRL+SHIFT+B to launch the Bookmarks manager, click Import & Backup, then choose Restore from the menu and pick a date. See screenshot.

I don't see a bookmarks manager! All I see is Bookmarks toolbar, bookmarks Menu and Unsorted bookmarks!

How did you go back to the previous version? I can't get Firefox 4 to load, and am currently using Internet Explorer.

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarks

To revert to the previous version, do the following.

Go to Download Firefox v3.6.17 and download it to the desktop.

Then go to Add/Remove Programs, scroll down to Mozilla Firefox and remove it, choosing to keep your bookmarks, customizations etc., (don't checkmark the box).

Then reboot and delete the folder called Mozilla Firefox at this location: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

Finally run the installation file you downloaded to the desktop earlier.

Your bookmarks, customizations etc., are maintained in a different location and will become available to you again once you complete the installation.

After you complete the installation, go to the Plugins Check page and update those where necessary.

I hate Firefox 4 too. WORST thing is moving the home button to the far side of the universe (the far right of the screen) with no way to move it back. Before, all the nav buttons were conveniently grouped together. Do you know how often I would quickly click "home"? Now I can't.

This new interface is an epic fail and needs to be fixed. I am using Firefox 4 at work but at home will stay with 3.6 forever!

I agree it's a silly place to put it, but you can move elements around in Firefox including buttons, toolbars etc.

In Firefox 4.0.x, right click a blank part of the Tab Bar and click Customize. A panel will open and while that remains onscreen, you can move the Home button to wherever you want to put it.

You can also drag stuff you don't want into that panel and drag other buttons and toolbars out which you want to add to the layout.

Also, right click a blank part of the tab bar and click "Tabs on top" to remove the checkmark. Tabs will subsequently reappear below the search bar.

Similarly, repeat the same steps, but click the top one called "Menu bar". This will reinstate the text links at the top.

In addition, to replace the status bar at the foot of the page, install this add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/status-4-evar/

So here's a question for you. Which version of Firefox do you see in the top half of the screenshot?

I tried to restore several days in the drop down list, but none of them would work. What do you do if you are stuck in "4.0 DOWN TO 3.6.17 LIMBO"??

When I checked my "Troubleshooting Information", it shows in "Modified Preferences" the following configs:

 browser.places.importBookmarksHTML false
 browser.places.smartBookmarksVersion 2

It appears that the Bookmarks Version is Firefox 2, and the import is turned off. How do you change these configurations? Seems like changing "false" to "true" and "2" to "3" would take care of the problem. Right???

you'd think so!

I DON'T NEED THE OLDER VERSION! ALREADY DONE THAT! I'M JUST TRYING TO FIND MY LOST BOOKMARKS!

check C:\Documents and Settings\"your user name"\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\'"whatever".default

if u uninstalled the new version and removed user profile data, your probably screwed

So how come if I go back to 3.6.8 I can get my bookmarks? Why when I then upgrade to 3.6.17 the bookmarks disappear again? And now back at 3.6.8 I have now two spurious bookmarks in my toolbar that I never put there and I cannot delete!

And the import bookmarks gives me a "cannot process backup file" msg.

And golly gee whiz -- Explorer can see all my toolbar bookmarks! Then going back to v4 I see the toolbar correctly displayed. Bizarre.

Finally, why the dickens when I post a reply to a message my post gets put at the bottom of the list, as though I were responding to the original question? Arrggh
