in any text box usually if i have typed something previously it shows what i have typed when i start typing in any box location box, any text box, well now it just pops up for a second then its gone. i cant get the list to stay open. for example im trying to select from the list below for this happend and when i click on the drop down arrow it flashes the list for a second but the list wont stay open. so i cannot see what to answer for that. so this happened starting yesterday.

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode?
A troubleshooting mode.
You can open the Firefox 4.0 SafeMode by holding the Shft key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut. Or use the Help menu item, click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled... while Firefox is running.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut to open it again.

Make sure that the Location Bar is not set to "Nothing":

  • Firefox (Tools) > Options > Privacy > Location Bar: When using the location bar, suggest: History, Bookmarks, History and Bookmarks
  • Smart Location Bar

This can also be caused by a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
