My "Clear recent history" option under tools is greyed out. How do I make it active so I can clear my cache?

You might be in "permanent" private browsing mode. This article has lots of information on how to manage this mode: Private Browsing | How to | Firefox Help. One thing you might look at quickly is

Tools > Options > Privacy

If you see a check in the box for Permanent Private Browsing Mode, clear (uncheck) it.
