I am nervous about installing the latest version of Firefox as it warned of a compatibility issue with my anti-virus, Kaspersky. What has happened in the past, is my computer freezes and refuses to shut down. I've been vigilant with the work-around(s) to avoid this from happening again, so am wondering if there is anything that can be done to make this Firefox version compatible with Kaspersky?

The core functionality of Kaspersky such as anti-virus still works, it is their add-on for Firefox that no longer works. It is down to Kaspersky to update their add-on to make it work with Firefox 4.
