Suggest installing "After the Deadline - Spell and Grammar Checker" extension works great -- thanks for the question. (see below)

I'm not aware of spell checker, grammar checking, or a thesaurus built-in to Hotmail. It would use what you are using in Firefox.

Spell checking is built-in to Firefox, but it is only partially implemented. See

You might check these add-ons out, the first gets you spelling and grammar, I don't know if the others would work in the input area. I'll be trying the first one, size seems reasonable for what I expect it to do. Worked great - spotted that l'd left out the word "don't".

Do you have a dictionary installed and selected?

  • You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.
  • Open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.
  • Make sure that [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu is check-marked.

You can enable or disable spell checking globally:

  • Tools > Options > Advanced : General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"

You can look here for dictionaries:

It is also possible that the website is disabling the Firefox spell check.
Try to toggle "Check Spelling" off/on in the right-click context menu to see if that helps.
