suddenly, I am getting a strange type of popup that isn't blocked. It must be manually closed, stays on the page in the same place.

Do a malware check with some malware scan programs. You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database before doing a scan.

I don't think this is malware.

  • It goes away on it's own after about 20 seconds
  • It is site specific.
   It comes up on NY Times offering a coupon discount for the NY times.
   It comes up  on TV Guide offering a discount for a TV Guide subscription.
  • It parks over at the corner of the page where it doesn't get in the way of the page content.
