Why don
On my office computer, private browsing windows have a mask icon on the upper right, but on my home computer there is none. Both operate in Windows 7. It's not a problem, but I do like seeing the icon to remind me that I am using private browsing.
Chosen solution
As you know, Firefox has two different menus: orange Firefox button (compact menu) or full width classic menu bar.
I don't use much private browsing, but this is my understanding of how the indicators work in Firefox 20 and later:
Compact menus | Classic menu bar | |
Regular session > New private window | Purple Firefox button with a mask | Purple mask appears at right end of the menu bar |
Automatic or permanent private browsing | Orange Firefox button with no mask | Regular menu bar with no mask |
Is that consistent with your experience?

Could it be,m that your home computer is running an outdated version of Firefox? Firefox ESR (i.e. the used-to-be Firefox 3.6) does not know the mask icon yet.
Are you running your home PC in permanent Private Browsing mode?
Enabled in Options rather than thru the menu item or the keyboard commands?
Always use private browsing mode - in Options > Privacy -> History
You won't see the purple mask in permanent Private Browsing mode.
- Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history" : "Always use private browsing mode"
