Upgrade Firefox on Linux from 14.0 - Not working

more options

My drop-down in "help" - "About Firefox" indicates I have 14.0 -canonical - 1.0 for Ubuntu. When I attempt to upgrade to 24 tar it downloads and reads the file but for some reason does not Open. Will you Please advise me on this? I have tried several different avenues and methods to do this update.
