Please ensure that you have both the Arial and Times New Roman fonts are installed on your computer.
If these fonts are both installed, please try Firefox in Safe Mode. More Details

Where does the problem font appear? Is it in a drop-down from the search box in the Firefox home page, or the search box on the main Navigation Toolbar?

the odd looking font appears in google links as well as titles of webpages and even in the search box
That's a very strange font. There is an extension you can use to list the fonts used in a selection (i.e., select text, right-click > Show Fonts in Selection).
Rebooting in Mac safe mode worked and fixed it, will this stay permanent?
You can do a check for corrupted and duplicate fonts and other font issues:

If you boot in Safe Mode, the fix will not stay permanently.
Can you try starting only Firefox in Safe Mode?
This will help us to decide whether it is a Firefox issue or an issue with your computer.
