Clicking on a tab to 'select & return to it' closes it instead. Not clicking on the X, in the middle of the tab.
I keep finding that tabs close unexpectedly when I click in the centre of the tab to return to it. Instead of re-opening the tab is closes. This has been happening repeatedly for ~ 10 days.
I have not changed any settings I have done a Firefox Reset (as things were running slowly) I have checked the settings in Tabs, and found nothing related to this.
thanks very much.

Okay, that definitely should not happen for a standard left or right click. However, it is normal for the tab to close with a "middle-click" on the mouse scroll wheel. Perhaps Firefox is a little confused about your mouse?
If you immediately press Ctrl+Shift+t (or right-click any tab > Undo Close Tab) does the closed tab return to its previous place?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
- Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
Perhaps I should have said: - I only use the default theme anyway, - I use a touch-pad not a mouse (one which has always been reliable up to now) on an HP Envy and that has got me thinking...
perhaps it's a middle-click thing?
Go into your computers Mouse / Pad control panel. Check the settings.
Okay I have solved it from these answers. Thanks guys!
The problem is being caused by a 'three fingers = middle click in Firefox' setting, and immediately clicking Control Shift t does get the closed tab back.
