How can I view my address book and messages at the same time?

Something changed this morning when my computer rebooted (I did not do this. There was an error and it rebooted automatically)where now I cannot hit forward and then see the message and address book. Only the address book is shown and no place to select the names to put in the To: box. I cannot forward an email.
