Java stopped working in FF 3.6.12despite having uninstalled/reinstalled latest Java

Life was good until recently when java stopped working in FF when accessing eBay (although this continues working fine in IE).

I have uninstalled all Java and reinstalled the latest version, made sure Java is enabled in FF, all to no avail. Clicking on Tools/Java Console does not bring up the console and most of the Java-based functions in eBay (Zoom, Enlarge, various links and buttons) are not working.

FF version is 3.6.12 and Java is 1.6.0.22 (per javatester.org web site... which does bring up the Java console in FF, for what ever that's worth... does this indicate the problem is with eBay and not FF???).

To avoid confusion: http://kb.mozillazine.org/JavaScript_is_not_Java

See JavaScript settings and preferences for interactive web pages and http://kb.mozillazine.org/JavaScript

  • "Clear the Cache": Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
  • "Remove the Cookies" from sites that cause problems: Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

See Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems and Troubleshoot issues with plugins like Flash or Java to fix common Firefox problems

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

  • Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
  • Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

Clearing the cache and deleting the cookies for the problem site (eBay) solved the problem for me. Thanks very much for the guidance.

If anyone can comment on what causes this problem, it would be useful to know. Thank you.

Clearing the cache and deleting cookies has NOT resolved this for me. I can't use any javascript buttons in Firefox 3.6.16! I'm running Windows 7 - 64 bit. I don't have this problem in IE or Google Chrome. Javascript is enabled in Firefox. I've tried using the Java console in Control Panel, but it won't let me set Mozilla as default for browsers because it says a browser is open and active, even if I've just booted up and no programs are running!

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
