It's Avast! WebRep that doesn't work in Firefox 6.

Avast! has released a BETA version of Avast! AntiVirus that adds support for Firefox 6.

Please DO NOT download the Beta. Wait for a stable release which could happen anytime in next week.

There are no problems with Firefox 6. There are problems with

  • 3rd-party developers who are not keeping pace with the changes,
  • 3rd-party developers not making their products compatible with new versions of Firefox during the testing period before release of new versions,
  • and not caring, so it seems, about keeping their users (paid and free versions) happy.

As for the Web Rep toolbar (and similar toolbars supplied by other security system developers), Firefox has a built-in function to help keep users away from known malicious web sites, Safe Browsing. Some/most of the functions of security system toolbars duplicate that built-in function in Firefox, but also add other search engines and various functions that may cause browser slow-downs. I do not use my security application toolbar, but depend on Safe Browsing for those functions:

You can also visit and post on the Avast forum for information on their updates and to verify that the Avast protection is still working in the background and that it is just their toolbar that has not been made compatible with Firefox 6.

SafeBrowser,

"3rd-party developers who are not keeping pace with the changes"

So how is IE compatible with all old versions of add-ons. Even if you try IE 10 Beta (when it's available) with an add-on that was released in 2009, it would still work.

It's Mozilla's fault indeed. Firefox 5 was a small change release and all extensions would work in it if there was no Add-on compatibility check. Add-on compatibility check is the culprit here.

Because IE

  • is not as strict concerning Add-ons,
  • will let any Add-on install itself and
  • does not require developers to test their Add-ons and,
  • does not require that version compatibility information to be included in/coded into the Add-on itself.

Any Add-on can, and sometimes does, leave an opening for hacker attack of the browsers. Mozilla, tests/examines Add-ons on the Mozilla/Firefox site to assure safety. No such assurance can be 100% accurate as Add-ons may interact with one another in such a way that can cause/create a security risk. I do not install Add-ons that are not on the Mozilaa/Firefox Add-on site. I do not even allow my security system (firewall, AV/AS) to install its toolbar. Besides, Firefox's Safe Browsing covers the major function of most security system toolbars.

More reasons that I do not use even the current IE version. I update Windows and Microsoft apps by my own method once each month, so IE is not used.

I am talking about Add-on compatibility check here. If an add-on leaves an opening for hacker attack it will leave the opening for all Firefox versions it can be installed on. To deal with add-ons opening a path for hackers, Mozilla uses add-on Blacklisting.

"Because IE does not require that version compatibility information to be included in/coded into the Add-on itself."

Which is a good thing. You know what, most security vendors, when they update their add-ons for Firefox, they just bump the version no. and change maxVersion to the latest Firefox version, unless the Firefox release is a big release like the last big release being Firefox 4.0.

Who's opinionated?

Maybe you should waste your time someplace else.
