Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

cor-el: Solved! Thank you for the clear instructions in solving this issue. It turned out to be "Evernote web clipper" that was causing the problem. The methodical instructions you gave were easy to follow (for a plodder like me) and I felt confident about what I was doing.
