I have never had this problem before and I update regularly and disable plugins and try safe mode and have NO security software stopping anything I run my security checks manually. FireFox 18 update totally stuffed my firefox I am using CHROME to type this. Firefox developers ... do you want people to use your program. Updates should never break the ADD-ONs why do you think anyone wants to USE FIREFOX in the first place ???? THIS IS the last time I click UPDATE for firefox... Once I figure out how to get ADBLOCK PLUS on chrome then I am afraid its goodbye FIREFOX because I do not have time to stop my DAY figuring out why an UPDATE totally locks up everything !!

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

See:

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Looks like lots of people having the same problem with F/F 18 as I have, will not even open. Starts up viewing in Task manager gets to 8,000kb then vanishes from the list "CRASHED". I would say mozilla have employed an Ex Opera code writer for v18 as my Opera regularly crashes normally as I am just finishing a long email so I loose everything. Mozilla if you have employed one of these incompetent fools from Opera SACK HIM/HER !My suggestion to users is download v19 Beta works a treat keeps bookmarks and add-ons.

My Final situation to this : After installing V18 18.0.1 update firefox became unusable An example is when you click the menubar eg Help and run your mouse over the items Firefox Help, ..... None of these items highlight at all. Also the whole program freezes and also it appears stable for a while but when using it or trying to enter text on pages nothing happens it just stops responding to windows events.

After trying a few methods - new profiles , reseting , and uninstalling nothing fixes it even after a clean install the same thing happens. Only after reverting to Firefox 17.0.1 do I get a clean responsive program back. I am not interested in a fix right now I will wait for newer versions to come out. I am running Windows XP on vmare and use other browsers as well with

Same here.

I think it is an Adobe flash/swf issue. I've had nothing but crashes, updated FF to 19, updated Adobe and still crashes and hangs.

It happens so much, it almost wants me to move over to Chrome and I've been with FF since day 1.

Same with opening a new window (CNTL+N) it opens, then suddenly jumps back to the original window for some reason.

Work out the bug with Adobe or sadly I can't keep reloading FF to view pages.
