Getting message "Firefox quite unexpectedly". I click "reopen" but it does not reopen. Get the same message every time. Tried deleting and redownloading, but same thing. I have a MAC. I was using Firefox when it suddenly quit. Now it just won't open again. Any help greatly appreciated.

First, reboot the computer.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} While you are in safe mode;

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Poke around safe web sites. Are there any problems?

Then restart.

thank you for trying to help me! I appreciate it. However, this did not work. I just can't open firefox. I removed and reinstalled. Each time I try to open, I get a message that firefox had a problem and crashed. Even when holding down option button it won't open. It was working fine, and then suddenly shut down and I am unable to reopen it. Thank you for any other suggestions on what to do!

Did it crash in safe mode?

In the address bar, type about:crashes. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers, click it and select Submit.

Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.

If you can't get Firefox to open, you will have to do this the hard way. Open the file browser / explorer on your computer. Enter this;

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\submitted

Copy the last 5-7 Recent File Names in the folder, including the date and time created. Post all the information in the reply box below.

Check my last post; If you can't get Firefox to open

Some problems occurs when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  • Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet. {web link}

I don't blame you if you want to give up! This still didn't work! I don't know what is going on...in security, I have clicked and allowed incoming connections for firefox... I have uninstalled and reinstalled firefox numerous times, restarted my computer. It just won't open! So strange! And the fact that it just suddenly stopped while I was on it is strange too...Thanks so much for all your help this far...

Okay, what we are going to do is make Firefox reload Everything.

  • 1 Open your Programs Files folder.
  • 2 Locate all folders that say Mozilla or Firefox
  • 3 Rename those folders by adding .old at the end
  • 4 Now open your user folder. c:\user\<you>
  • 5 I don't know how it is with Mac. In Windows; look for the <user>\AppData\Roaming\ folder
  • 6 Rename anything Mozilla or Firefox by adding .old
  • 7 Now, run the full installer you downloaded before. By renaming all the folders, it will think it's a fresh install. All we want right now is to get you on line

Once you have done the above, try it out.If it works, we will work on restoring your profile.

I just can't get online with Firefox! I did what you said, opened a new firefox, and get the same message...see image...I feel very bad that I am wasting your time...thank you so much for helping me...

Helping is what we do, not to worry. Thank you for your question and using Firefox. So far, it seems that Firefox will not open at all and it immediately quits unexpectedly.

  1. Make a back up of the profile folder Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles
  2. Do a clean reinstall and delete all other files in that profile folder.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:

Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.

WARNING:Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device! See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

Please report back to say if this helped you!

Thank you.

Thank you again for your help, but no go. I don't know if I explained well enough, but I simply cannot get on the internet with Firefox. It just won't open. So I downloaded several times Firefox from the Chrome browser. Each time I uninstalled and then reinstalled, but it just won't open. I keep getting that same message "Firefox quit unexpectedly. Click reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more detailed information and send a report to Apple." Clicking reopen just gives me the same message again. So frustrating and I really feel like I am wasting your time but I do appreciate your help!

Have you checked the firewall?

more options

It may be the firewall too. An it may be possible that a large amount of the resources of the mac are being used when you try to open Firefox. Please try to remove older downloads of Firefox and have at least have 512 MB of ram available before you open it. This can be checked in the Disk Utility.

Try to boot your Mac in Safe Mode.

   *Starting up in Safe Mode: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455

There may also be a log on your system that would note what is causing the start up crash: http://bjango.com/help/crashlogmac/ use that to find your diagnosticsreport

Hi! I went into safemode, and removed the plugins and reset firefox. Firefox works fine in safemode. Then back in regular mode, and it does not work. I don't know how to get crash report while in regular mode. This is a picture (I could not get a screen shot) while I was in safemode of the crash report from firefox.
