I have just set up a new Acer desktop with Windows 8.3. I downloaded Thunderbird and transferred my address books and files. It worked fine but suddenly, several days later, both the program and the e-mail files just vanished. A search of the computer and a System Restore failed to find it or fix it.

Well I've heard of Thunderbird losing track of emails for various reasons, but never ever heard of it deleting the actual Thunderbird installation.

If you restored to a point prior to the date and time of installing Thunderbird, then you would expect everything to do with Thunderbird would be deleted.

System Restore does not recover deleted files, it goes back in time to a set point. As this is a new computer and you had only just added Thunderbird, it is likely that the System Restore point was not after you had added Thunderbird unless you deliberately created one.
