You can enable a desktop notification for new messages:

Tools -> Settings/Preferences -> Show an alert

If you want to have an icon in your tray menu that is always visible in the right of your task bar, you can move it there, when you have a new message (it is located in the extended tray menu by default).

I'm using ver 38.0.1. Tools does not have a settings/preferences choice.

you propably used the menu button in the top left corner. If you use this button, you can directly choose Settings/Preferences. The instruction above is for the menu bar. You can show it temporarily by pressing the [alt] key.

When I select tray message alert, I appear to get nothing (the sound alert does work). Perhaps the tray icon flashes, but goes away immediately. Eudora would leave the icon in the tray until the message was opened. What button have I not pushed? Thnx

Got it answered myself. Default is show notifications, should be show icon and notifications. sorry to bother anyone.
