When I close a tab, why do I get a tabless blank screen instead of the view switching to one of the tabs that is open?

Like the title says. I close a tab I'm done with, and instead of switching to a tab that's there, I get a tabless white screen. Also get a blank white screen when I start firefox along with the restored previous session. I believe it's happened since I updated firefox.

On the about:newtab page in the upper right hand corner, is there an option to change the blank page to Classic or another option?
