This also occured on the 2 previous versions of T-Bird There is no pattern that I can detect as an email from the same sender will show both ways.

Yes, the date of today's messages is not shown. It is on all the older ones (and IIRC any from the future.)

You presumably captured that image today, 3rd December 2015? So it shows the date for messages that were dated yesterday and the day before etc. Tomorrow it will add the date to those messages which arrived today.

Once you have become used to the lack of date meaning "today" you'll start to appreciate the ease with which this lets you spot recent messages.
