How do I keep the options tab from showing when Firefox starts?

I had to open the options tab to reset my home page. Now the options tab is always there. Although I close the options tab it reappears every time I start Firefox. I tried to "pin it", and it appeared as a small tab to the left of my home page tab. But when I restarted Firefox the small pinned tab appeared to the left of my home page tab and a full sized options tab appeared to the right of my home page tab. I am using Firefox version 43.0.2. How do I keep the options tab from appearing unless I select it from the Tools menu?

Chosen solution

Type about:config<enter> in the address bar. If a warning screen comes up, press the Be Careful button. At the top of the screen is a search bar. Type browser.startup.homepage.

Click on this to edit. Look for |about:preferences#general or |about:preferences and remove it.

Note that this can happen if you click "Use Current Page(s)" to set the home page and about:preferences is open in a tab. You can pin the tab with the about:preferences page via the right-click context menu of this tab on the Tab bar to prevent including about:preferences to the home page setting if you want to use this button in "Options/Preferences > General" (pinned tabs aren't included). To set a single page as the home page you can drag the globe/padlock to the toolbar Home button.

Firefox supports multiple home pages separated by '|' (pipe) symbols.
