I can not deliver a crashreport because it is a hard crash and Firefox creates no report. I tried everything from savemode, new installation, deleting and recreating a Firefox Sync Account. When the first firefox ist syncing everything is fine, when the firefox on the second Windows device is starting to sync firefox freezes after a few moments and and windows 10 is marking firefox as unresponsive. It all started after upgrading to 55.0.3. When I disconnect from Firefox Sync everything is working normal.

It is having trouble syncing because the login is not working. Can you remove the account, then log back in from the Preferences menu?

Hi, i tried and i am logged in as far as i can say. I even recieve the "new device logged in"-email from accounts@firefox.com, but after a while firefox becomes "no response" and i have to turn it off in the task manager. This is the new logfile after i removed my account and then loged back in:

With Sync disconnected on that 2nd device, in Options > Sync under Sync across all devices disable all the Sync data categories except for one like maybe Passwords (History & Bookmarks usually have a "ton" of data), then Connect that device to the Sync system. See if that one data category will synchronize properly and not create an error-log.

If that works, enable another data category and again see if that will synchronize. And if that is successful carry on doing the same until all the data categories have gotten data from Sync.

No basis to think that might be successful - just a hunch I have.

the-edmeister I believe you are right, it looks like it started to fail at bookmarks. I would also create a back up of this file in your profile: places.sqlite Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles

Let me see if I can get another opinion from #sync

more options

The second opinion has been obtained, and the-edmiester was on the right path. Please disable the addon that is organizing your bookmarks.

"Bookmarks Organizer, version 1.3.0" might be slowing down the sync process and the combination slowing down the browser.

Thanks for all the help. I did as the-edmeister advised and found that all categories but bookmarks are working. Everytime I enable "bookmarks" firefox becomes unresponsive after sometime and it is creating heavy cpu load and finally windows suggests to kill the task. As guigs suggested I deactivted the addon "Bookmarks Organizer" but it makes no difference. I did a Backup of "places.sqlite", what can I do with the file?

more options

I tried something new and deleted all my bookmarks after a backup. With only this page as a bookmark the sync between PC and notebook is working fine. In the backup I have 4000 Bookmarks. Can that be the problem? To many bookmarks? Or is their a way to find the "bad" bookmark in the backup?

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

See also:

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You may have to restore an older compressed .jsonlz4 backup.

  • Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup -> Restore

The name of a JSON bookmarks backup file includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once.

  • bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.

And i tried already to rebuild the places.sqlite but i changed nothing with regard to the unresponsive firefox.

In case of issues with Sync you can try this:

Disconnect from Sync and Reconnect to Sync again (doesn't apply in your case). You can disconnect from Sync by clicking the e-mail address in the "3-bar" Firefox menu button drop-down list or go to "Options/Preferences > Sync".

Delete the signedInUser.json file in the Firefox profile folder and delete the Weave folder (Sync was formerly named Weave).

Remove an existing chrome://FirefoxAccounts entry in the Firefox Password Manager. If that isn't enough then delete the prefs.js files to reset all prefs and maybe also delete the compatibility.ini file to reinitialize the profile.

Delete and re-create the Firefox account or change the Sync password. Note that changing the Sync password will wipe all data stored on the Sync server.

Can you log in to the Sync account via this page?

One thing that I am curious about with regards to your More system details as listed with your original posting in this thread ...

What's with all those (Inactive) extensions? Was that a troubleshooting exercise to try to get to the bottom of your problem with Sync? If so that is understandable.

But if not for troubleshooting this issue, why not create a new Profile and see how Sync works on an "unmolested" Profile? If it doesn't help you can always go back to that Profile and keep using it.

more options

Yes, the inactive extensions were for troubleshooting. I already created a new profile (before experimenting with the extensions/addons). Now I created a new sync as cor-el suggested. I even registered with a complete new mail address, but the problem with syncing my bookmarks remains. Syncing other bookmarks works fine! I assume, there must be something wrong with my bookmarks. I already exported them as html and reimported them in a clean profile, but they still create a unresponsive firefox when I try to sync them on a second device. I used different extensions to find "bad" or faulty bookmark-entries, but it didn't change anything with regard to my problem. It is a mystery!

Since update to firefox 56 I was able to get a crash report. I think it is related to the sync Problem: https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/dcf18d1b-6e9e-4523-adfc-c02cf0171011

hansfrister, Apologies for this request, but can you start a new question with the steps you took before this particular crash?
