Add a new mailbox is fine, but TB creates automatically this mailbox user with its own Inbox and Trash folders. If I change "Copies & Folders" to "Local Folders", no physical change takes place and it is left as was when I set the account up

Inbox and trash folders for your new user are on the server, not local.

If you want them to be removed from your view, just "unsubscribe" to them.

Keep in mind specifying local folders will essentially remove your emails from the server and you will end up with only one (local) copy of your emails (much like POP3).

What are you trying to achieve in the first place?

Step-by-step. I need to add a "new" mailbox to be checked by Thunderbird. This mailbox is already on my isp's server and lets say it is called RDC1@ntlworld.com with a password of giveadamn1. In TB Tools/Account Settings/Account Actions/Add Mail Account. In Mail Account Setup- Rich C, RDC1@ntlworld.com, givadamn1, tick remember password then select continue. In Mail Account Setup- for incoming select POP3. select Manual Config. Select POP3, pop.ntlworld.com, 110, AutoDetect, AutoDetect For outgoing select smtp,ntlworld.com:465(default), SSL/TLS, Normal Password Incoming and Outgoing automatically named as RDC1@ntlworld.com Within TB on the left pane, an entry is created as RDC1@ntlworld.com with its own Inbox and Trash Folders. I then in TB reselect Tools/Account Settings and select the entry for RDC1@ntlworld.com and then select Copies & Folders. On the next screen/form I change each selection to as Local Folders. Now I cannot look at emails for RDC1@ntlworld.com unless I click the entry for RDC1@ntlworld.com, Inbox and then select Get Messages. For my already existing POP3 accounts I now have to select Local Folders, Inbox and then select Get Messages. So..how do I get this "new" account to act like my existing accounts?

Thanks Christ1..now solved - its about the word Global! - and quite obvious and logical. If I had a brain I would certainly be dangerous. Once again thank you
