When I type a word in the toolbar and hit enter, firefox places a .net after the word and treats it as a URL rather than initiating a search. I've tried changing some of the About:Cnfig settings for Browser. URLbar but this made no difference.

This .net URL fixup would normally happen if you hold down the Shift key and press Enter.

It is possible that some of the status keys have the wrong state and Firefox sees them as still pressed.

Try to press all the status keys (Shift, Ctrl, Alt) a few times to see if that helps to recover from this. If it doesn't help then close and restart Firefox or reboot the computer.
