windows 10 FF67 won't start

FF updated to version 67. On a couple of Windows 10 machines so far, FF won't start. Double-clicking the icon does not work. Task Manager will show two instances of FF and the EXE closes out after a minute, and the program does not start. Rebooting does not help. The Win10 versions experiencing issues after updating to version 67 are a Win10 1703 and a Win10 1803 machine.

Let’s do a full clean re-install;

Note: Firefox comes in three or more folders on all computers. They are;

Maintenance: (Programs Folder) <Windows Only> Firefox itself: (Programs Folder) And two folders in the profile of each user on the computer for each Firefox profile for that user.

If you remove the Firefox folder, the user profiles would not be affected.


Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Note: Check Both Folders

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Look for, and remove any Mozilla or Firefox program folders. Do not remove the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

Do Not remove any profile folders.

Try to start Firefox in Safe Mode to see if that works.

  • Windows: hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox
  • Mac: hold down the Options key while starting Firefox

It is possible that your firewall or other security software blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox application. Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

Neither doing a full clean install, nor trying to start in safe mode helped. I do have some more troubleshooting info, which may help narrow down the problem.

Reinstalling and running under an administrator account works fine. The problem is when you run it under a Power User or Users account. This is a factory floor computer having issues, so we can't give admin rights to this account on the machine.

What happens is when you double-click the icon, in Task Manager you see two firefox programs firing up, and then after a few seconds they both go away. That's it. Doesn't fire up at all.

Now if you right click and say "run as administrator", put admin credentials in, it works fine. Except we can't do that with this computer going forward. We also tried going into the security on the EXE and add full rights in to that limited user, just for the EXE. Doesn't work. Also tried compatibility mode, but still doesn't work.

So far it looks like you need to have full admin rights to the PC to make it work. Let me know if there's something else to try. I thought running it once under an admin account or running it once and supplying admin credentials would work, but it doesn't . Thanks

And we just had a new computer have issues with 67. This one was Win7 64bit. Again, if you sign in as administrator, it works fine. But if you sign in as a limited user, it won't fire up. So the issue is not the OS. It's something with that new FF version 67. Any ideas ?

Shut down Firefox. Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Note: Check Both Folders

Right click on Firefox.exe and select Properties. Now select Compatibility. Turn Off Run This Program In Compatibility Mode, and Run This Program As An Administrator.

Do the same for any Firefox shortcuts you have. Now restart Firefox.

Compatibility mode is off, but I cannot turn on run as administrator. These are factory floor computers and do not have access to admin privileges.

Also another computer caused issue today. This one was a Win10 1803 PC that DID have admin privileges. With that one we had to "run as administrator" to make it work, and then after that it worked normally afterwards. Seems like there's an issue with the installer. If you have admin privileges on the PC, then running it once will clear it up, but if it's a PC without admin privileges, it will never work, even if you run it once with admin rights.

I had another issue today with a Win10 1709 laptop. Firefox would not open, even after a reboot. I had to right-click the EXE and say "run as administrator" to clear out whatever the problem was. Now it opens normally once again.

But again, we still have issues with PCs on our factory floor. Doing "run as administrator" will open the program once, but that's it. We do not give people admin rights to factory PCs. Please look into the installer for version 67. There's something different than before. If we have to go around to all the PCs and fix them manually anyways, we will just install Chrome. Not what I want to do, but we may have to.

It sounds that there is a problem with the permissions if you need to run Firefox as administrator. Running an internet browser as administrator is never a good thing as this makes you more vulnerable. Best would be to uninstall Firefox and install Firefox on those devices as a normal user to see if that works better.

Seems to be worse now with the new 67.01 version that just released. I was hoping my previous issues would be fixed. Nope.

FF updated in the background on a Win7 PC, but now the app crashes when firing up in a standard user account.  I can log on as an account with administrator rights, and it works OK.  Log back in with a standard user account and it crashes.   (text of app crash below)

This is a problem with your security software. The sxwmon64.dll module is part of Lumension Endpoint Security.

We don't use Lumension, so I don't know why that DLL is on there. We use Vipre and Malware Bytes. We did disable the AV software that was on there, reboot and try again. Same issue.
